Hi! I'm considering if I should upgrade my old 2007 iSonic 133 to the new iSonic 117 wide.
What are the differences between the 2007 iSonic 133 and 2011 iSonic 117 wide? The specs look quite similiar, both being 80 cm wide. Are there any major differences in e.g early planing, control and jibing? I'm 72kg/180 cm, surfing in lake conditions, biggest sail 8.8 m2 |

I would suggest that your old board may have the edge on early planning, but if so only just.... The WC 117 W only weighs 7kgs so very light indeed. A big plus on the controllability and gybing compared with your 133. The tail is a lot narrower so gybes very well for its size. Ideal size sail is 8.5 ish so your 8.8 with your weight will work well. Not sure what your change down sail is but I use a 7.6 on the 117 wide quite often and works pretty well... Hope it answers a few of your questions.

Hi Unregistered
It's a completely different board who a lot less volume to get better control + the Deep Deck Concave. Also this board have a wide wind range and competitive at high level from 7 to 9.2. For your it's exactly the board who will fit perfectly your 8.8. Planning will be same in wood but acceleration and top end speed in comfort will be better if you take the Carbon one the difference will be even bigger everywhere, notice that the Carbon is 1kgs lighter than the Wood! Hope this help All the best

Hi!
Thank you, very valuable answers! I've been also considering getting a second hand iSonic 121 (as a cheaper alternative to the 117w) to replace the older iSonic 133, and also to get better jibing. Do you have any comments on that, would that also work with my 8.8 and would I lose much in early planning compared to 117w? My next smaller sails are 7.8 and 7.0. |

There is a story in the numbers
![]() 2007 iS133 is 80cm wide and real volume was 127 litres. Tail width 54cm. 7.8kg weight. Heavier, softer and older design. 2011 iS117 is 80cm wide and volume 117 litres. Tail width 52cm. 6.2kg weight. Carbon much lighter, stiffer and newer design. iS117 carbon will be faster, plan similar to 07 iS133, more control in rough seas and gybe better for sure. |
