Tectonic Talon/iS107

Would be great to hear from anyone using Talons on the iS107. Im interested to know what sizes you are using. These fins cost lots and I would like to get it right first time

Iv'e been using Select SL7's, 39cm/7m 41cm/8m/9m and a 45cm/9m in super light winds (but not used too much) these are all very powerful fins for their size. So I am thinking I need slightly bigger Talons because they might be as powerful as the SL7's.

Stocks for the Talon in the UK are low, I can only get 38cm, 40cm and 44cm. Im wondering if the 44cm is maybe to big?

44 is way too big in my point of view. On the other hand the 107 is quite a powerfull board and needs some lift to fly over the wave. Today I was windsrfing @ Wakayama with my 2012 107 and a Talon in 38cm but found that fin too small most of the time. It was the first test of the fin and I was using my 2011 GTX Race in 7.5 in corss onshore conditions. (I'm ~78kg @180cm)
Usually I use the Hurricane SS2 in 38cm and the new SR5 in 40 with the board. These fins provide much more lift and without being as hard and stiff as the Select fins which made my earlier boards riding like a wild bull once properly powered up.
I'll keep the Talon in 38cm for very rough and overpowered conditions and use the Hurricane fins mostly.

I have a I-111 and I regularly use a 40 Talon with a 7.3 Hot Sail GPS 2008 that seems about right. With my 2010 8.0 GPS I feel under finned with the 40, but the Drake 44 works nicely ... only problem it delivers beautifully unrecoverable mile long spin outs!

So ... a 42 Talon might be the ticket with a 8.0 and 9.0, you can always order direct from Tectonics, I am thinking to order a 43 myself.

Thanks guy's. Gives me a bit more info to help choose. Im steering towards 40, 42 and 44 (so far)

Davide, hi, What weight are you? I've just bought a 111 and it came with a drake 42 do you think will work well with a 7.6m? Also what size fin would you use with a 6.4m? I'm 88Kg's

I am 72Kg. The drake 42 should work fine with the 7.6. However, as I mentioned, it is quite horrible. It works if you are just cruising around powered/underpowered, but when you are really powered up or want to push the board it is completely unpredictable. It can be comically entertaining: the longest ever spin out in my windsurfing career; to the borderline dangerous: spinning out the second I release the weight from the back foot entering a jibe, and stalling the board on the inside rail ... not fun when you are doing close to 30 with a 8.0 ...

There is no comparison with the performance of the Talon, I basically never spin out and the fin can be easily pushed with no consequence even by a recreational sailor like myself.

For what it's worth, I have an iS 111 and use a Tetonics Tomcat 42. I weigh 77 kg and the fin works great with my TR race sails, 6.6, 7.6 and 8.4. It's a little bit large for the 6.6 and a little bit small for the 8.4, but nevertheless a great one fin compromise.

I am not racing slalom, just freeriding. Downwind slalom will require a slightly smaller fin.

Hi guys,
the Talon works really nice on teh 107. Would recommend sizes in 38 cm and 40 cm. For sailing with a lot of upwind or heavy guys (90+ kg), even in downwind, I would recommend the 42 for your quiver.

In extremely overpowered conditions you also could chooose shorter than 38 m.

hi everybody,

im 83 kg, i use talon 40 with 111 with sails 7.0, 7,5, 8,0 gaastra gtx race (i should switch to race sails). with 7.0 its awesome, with 7.5 quite good, with 8.0 its a little bit small, i use 36 with 111 down to 6 with no cam sails (hope to get some smaller sail also ).

talons are very fast fins with right size and hardly spin out, and if it occurs very easy to recover in a blink. its a very very good fin, best that i use. (dont have to much experience with others by the way i use drake, deboichet SL1)

on the other hand Last month i was on 40, a friend was on 38 with both is111, both on 7.0 freerace he experience some spin outs when hardly push the board, but i have 1 spin out in 4 hours. ??

Best combo imho: (im not an expert by the way %50 gybe success yet )

34 up to 6.3 with 97is (dont have smaller board i guess i should buy one also but use talons with 97 several times)
36 up to 6.7 - 97is
38 up to 7.2 - 97is
40 up to 7.8 - 107is
42 up to 8.5 - 107is

never use it in a bigger size, and i wonder its performance is the same?? any one who use it for a size like 50-52

Yeah Fataux,
that all sounds well. I found out that the 107 or 111 doesn´t feel so perfect with 7,0,but is a very fast combo with an easy handling at jibes. It´s definitely great to combine the 107 or 111 with a smaller board like you do. I use the 87. This board gives me an extremely wide windrange and it´s possible to survive even in the biggest storm.
You should try out an iSonic 87 or the 80, which fit geat with 7,0 and smaller.
