Frequently Asked Questions - Windsurfing:
How do I choose the right Starboard Windsurf board?
Choosing the right Windsurf board depends on your skill level, body weight, wind strength, and discipline (Entry-Level, Freeride, Wave, Freestyle, Race, or Windfoil).
Beginner riders should prioritize stability and volume, while advanced riders should choose boards optimized for performance and specific conditions.
I’m a beginner — which Windsurf board should I start with?
For beginners and progressing riders, we recommend Entry-Level Windsurf boards such as the GO152, .GO Windsurfer and Start 2. These boards offer excellent stability, easy uphauling, early planing, and forgiving handling to help you progress safely and confidently.
How much volume do I need in a Windsurf board?
As a general guideline:
- Beginners: body weight (kg) + 30–50 liters
- Intermediate riders: body weight (kg) + 10–30 liters
- Advanced riders: volume depends on wind strength, sail size, and riding style
More volume increases stability and ease of use, while lower volume improves control and maneuverability in stronger winds.
What are the different Windsurf disciplines?
- Entry-Level – Stable and forgiving boards for learning and progression
- Freeride – Early planing, comfort, and versatility
- Wave – Compact shapes for maneuverability and control in waves
- Freestyle – Shorter boards designed for tricks.
- Race – High-performance boards optimized for speed and competition
- Windfoil – Boards designed to lift above the water using a foil
Each discipline is designed for specific conditions and riding goals or personal preference.
What is Windfoil and how is it different from fin Windsurfing?
Windfoiling replaces the traditional fin with a foil, allowing the board to lift above the water at much lower speeds.
This reduces drag and enables smooth, efficient riding in lighter winds and choppy conditions, opening new possibilities compared to traditional fin windsurfing.
Which Starboard boards can be used for Windfoiling?
Only boards listed in the Windfoil Boards category on the Starboard website are designed and approved for foil use.
These boards feature reinforced foil box systems specifically engineered to handle the high loads generated by foils.
Can I use a foil on any Starboard Windsurf board?
No. Only boards shown in the Windfoil Boards category on the Starboard website are foil-approved.
Installing a foil on any Windsurf board that is not classified as a Windfoil board will damage the fin box or board structure.
Damage caused by installing a foil on a non-approved board is considered misuse and is not covered under warranty.
We strongly advise you to go for the Starboard Foils as they are the most optimised foils for our boards.
What happens if I install a foil on a non-Windfoil board?
Using a foil on a non-approved board can result in:
- Structural damage to the fin box
- Cracks or delamination around the box area
- Permanent board failure
Any damage caused by foil use on a non-Windfoil board will void the warranty and cannot be claimed.
How can I be sure my board is foil-approved?
Your board must:
- Appear in the Windfoil Boards category on the Starboard website
- Feature a dedicated, reinforced foil box system
If your board is not listed in the Windfoil category, it is not foil-approved, even if the fin box appears similar.
When in doubt, contact your authorized Starboard dealer or distributor before installing a foil.
What should I do if I damage (ding) my Windsurf or Windfoil board?
If you notice a crack, hole, or structural damage, stop using the board immediately.
Water can enter the EPS core and permanently increase the board’s weight.
Dry the board thoroughly and have it professionally repaired before further use.
How should I take care of my windsurf or windfoil board?
Rinse with fresh water after each session
Avoid prolonged sun exposure when not in use
Store and transport your board in a board bag
Regularly check fin or foil bolts and inserts
Proper care will extend the lifespan and performance of your board.
Where can I find windsurf or windfoil board specifications (volume, width, weight)?
All board specifications are listed in the specifications table at the bottom of each product page.
Which fin bolts will fit my Starboard Windsurf board?
Starboard Windsurf boards use different fin box systems depending on the model and discipline (Powerbox, Tuttle, Deep Tuttle, US Box, StarBox, or Foil Box).
The exact fins supplied with your board and the fin box type are listed in the Specifications table on each product page.
Please refer to the 'Specifications' tab under your board model to see:
