Starboard Windsurfing Construction Technology Wood Sandwich

Wood Sandwich

Wood Carbon Sandwich Construction – A Better Choice, Naturally.

Our next-generation Wood Carbon Sandwich construction blends natural feel with serious performance. At its core is a sustainably sourced wood sandwich using natural unidirectional fibers, which absorb 50% less epoxy than carbon, making it both lighter and more eco-friendly.

An exclusive high-strength PVC layer, 30% stronger than standard sandwich materials, adds structural integrity. Wrapped around the rails is a parabolic Kevlar-Carbon band for increased responsiveness and durability.

Inside the core, we added 2 layers of UD Carbon on the rail, one inside and one outside the PVC layer, stretching from behind the back strap to 50cm in front of the mast track, making it 28 times stiffer than on a flat surface. This layered setup acts like a backbone, adding serious torsional stiffness and power without losing the board’s natural flex and control. Finally, the natural wood layer underfoot brings a uniquely comfortable ride feel, reducing harsh feedback without sacrificing responsiveness, making every session smoother, lighter, and more controlled.

DESIGNED. FROM THE GROUND UP

Durable lightweight technology designed from the ground up as our lowest carbon-footprint boards. Using high strength Sicomin epoxy resins, optimally positioned and carefully aligned panels of natural 0.6mm Australian Pinewood, providing full deck sandwich construction with optimal fatigue properties, excellent shear strain, overall stiffness and reduced weight.

NATURE'S WONDER MATERIAL

Wood Technology, introduced by Starboard back in 1995, weighed a kilo less than the best boards at the time. Today, we bring back this classic technology utilising the low resin absorption and naturally unidirectional benefits of Australian Pinewood, improved impact resistance and lower laminate weights. Crisp and responsive on the water, yet smooth, comfortable & durable.

FLEX OPTIMIZATION

We’ve added extra-light unidirectional carbon strips along the Kode rails to further stiffen the board between the back foot and the mast track plus Innegra Carbon rails all around the iSonics & Futuras for extra stiffness and impact resistance.
