Foilboards FAQs
What size wing foil board for my weight?
Sizing a wing foil board for your weight all depends on your level.
- Beginners: a good rule of thumb is your body weight in kg plus 40-60 litres.
- Intermediate riders: your weight plus 10-30L is suitable
- Advanced riders, close to your body weight or even below.
Above vs Take Off foil board — which one?
- Board style: the Above is longer and narrower; the Take Off is short and wide.
- Stability: the Above is very stable; the Take Off is less stable.
- Take-off: the Above lifts early and easily; the Take Off needs more technique.
- Best conditions: the Above suits light wind and cruising; the Take Off suits stronger wind and playful riding.
- Skill level: the Above suits beginner to intermediate; the Take Off suits intermediate and up.
- Feel: the Above is smooth and glidey; the Take Off is reactive and compact.
What foil mast length should I choose?
Foil mast length depends on the rider's ability and what discipline of foiling you’re doing.
- 60–75 cm → beginner / shallow water
- 75–85 cm → best all-round choice
- 85–95+ cm → advanced / speed / rough water
Short masts feel easier at first, but you outgrow them quickly. If you’re unsure, just get around 75–85 cm. That’s the “do everything” size and what most riders end up using long-term anyway.
What makes Starboard foilboards different from competitors?
Starboard focuses on refining very specific use cases rather than making one-size-fits-all boards. It’s got dedicated designs for racing, downwind, light wind, wave, freestyle, and beginner progression, rather than just slight variations of the same shape.Starboard is known for their lightweight but extremely strong constructions, as well as its eco-consciousness. A big part of that is how Starboard approaches materials and manufacturing. They’ve put a lot of effort into using things like plant-based resins, recycled materials, and more responsible supply chains to reduce the environmental impact of their boards.
Ace vs X-15 — freeride vs race foiling

- Take-off: the Ace is easy and smooth; the X-15 is fast but technical.
- Speed: the Ace is moderate to fast; the X-15 is very high.
- Stability: the Ace is high; the X-15 is lower, being performance-focused.
- Skill level: the Ace suits intermediate to advanced; the X-15 suits advanced and race riders.
