Mounting your SUP on the roof doesn’t need to be stressful. In fact — it’s easier than you think. Whether you’re driving down to your local lake or heading out on a cross-country mission, you want your board to arrive safely. No dings. No drama.
In this video, Starboard’s Bruce Kirkby shares his go-to method to secure your board — fast, clean, and 100% bomber.
STEP-BY-STEP: HOW TO DO IT RIGHT
1. CENTER YOUR BOARD
Place your board on the roof, between the racks. Use the handle to check it’s centered.
TIP: Use a foam pad under hard boards to protect your deck. Inflatables don’t need it.
2. USE CAM STRAPS
Take your cam straps and untangle them so they’re ready to use. Make sure the buckle is working properly and that the strap isn’t twisted.
3. THREAD THE STRAPS
Take the buckle end of the strap. Loop it under the rack and behind the upright stanchion. Place the buckle on top of the board. Now throw the long tail over to the other side.
4. LOCK IT DOWN
Go around to the other side. Take the strap tail, loop it under the opposite rack, bring it back up to the buckle. Feed it through from underneath. Pull it tight. Done.
IMPORTANT: Never loop straps under the board. Both sides should go OVER the top. Always.
