How To Hold Your Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) Paddle

Holding your SUP paddle correctly will ensure you get the most of your time on the water. A Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) paddle normally has a tear-drop shaped blade that angled forward to maximize the power of your stroke. See below for how to hold your SUP paddle correctly.

1. Paddle Length

The paddle should be a Shaka length above your head. You can adjust the length easily with Starboard 2 piece and 3 piece adjustable shaft.

2. Grip Width

Holding the paddle above your head and bend your elbows at 90 degrees will create a perfect grip width.

 3. How to hold the paddle

  • Handle – is where your top hand should be
  • Shaft – your bottom hand should be a little bit more than shoulder-width apart.
  • Blade – the blade should always flick forward for maximizing your stroke power.
